WILLIAM TOLLE5
(Roger Jr4; Roger3;
Tobias2; Roger1)
William Tolle, son of Sally Sarah (Simms) &
Roger Tolle Jr, was born 2 Oct 1785 in Fauquier County,
Virginia.
William appeared on the personal property
tax list of Fauquier County, Virginia with his father in
1800-1803. On 15 Mar 1804 he was married to Mary/Polly
Turner.
Sometime after 1804 he moved to Amherst
County, Virginia where he was found in the 1810 and 1820
census. He served in the War of 1812 for six months as a
Private in the 8th Regiment (Walls) of Virginia Militia
under Captain Sales. In Virginia his occupation was
overseeing the plantations and negroes of other men. There
were recommendations from his employers filed in his old
papers long after his death, and preserved by his
descendants.
After 1820 he moved again, this time to
Barren County, Kentucky and was on the tax rolls for
1821-1829. There is a record on file there in 1822, signed
with his brother Alexander, giving power of attorney to
James Dillard to handle their claim to their father's
Revolutionary War claims.
Polly (Turner) Tolle died 29 Jul 1823 at the birth of
their 15th child. She is buried in the Tolle-Snoddy Cemetery
in Barren County.
William married again in 1825 to
Martha Jane Snoddy. She was born 27 Feb 1805 and was the
daughter of his neighbors Sally (Allen) and Daniel Snoddy.
Three of Martha Snoddy's siblings also married three of
William Tolle's children. William and Martha Jane had an
additional twelve children. Although not all of William's
children lived to be adults, to my knowledge, he holds the
record for fathering the most children in the Tolle
family.
In 1829 he mortgaged to Daniel Snoddy "1
wagon and 1 jack screw, 4 set gear, 1 pair stretchers, all
the stock of horses, cattle, hogs & sheep, household &
kitchen furniture, all farming utensils & plows, axes, saws,
planes, augurs, chisels, a rifle gun & shot gun, all of his
books and his crop of tobacco, corn, fodder & oats for the
sum of $150 to be paid on or before 29 Dec 1835." Signed by William Tolle & Martha Tolle and witnessed
by Benjamin
A. Snoddy & Walter Bransford.
In September of 1834, William made a trip to Clay County,
Missouri and back and he kept a leather bound journal
describing that journey, which took two months and covered
several states. One hundred and thirty years later it was
found in the attic of the old farmhouse by a
great-great-grandson Ray Tolle, and another of his
descendants, a Tolle Family Exchange member, Donald MacDavid
(Dave) Tolle, transcribed it into a nice book, and added
genealogical data and photos.
William was part of a
12-man coroner's jury on 27 Oct 1838 investigating the death
of an infant. He had fifteen acres of land surveyed in his
name in Barren County on 7 Apr 1840, and he eventually
accumulated nearly 400 acres of land in Barren County. He
was enumerated in the 1840 census, and in the 1850 census he
was age 64, a farmer born in Virginia.
Between
1840-1850, he carried mail on horseback from Glasgow and
other points for eight years, making one trip a week. When
his mail contract ended he engaged in selling clocks for a
few years in Green County, Kentucky.
An ink sketch of
his homestead was featured in The Tolle Family Exchange
Newsletter a few days ago.
William died 27 Sep 1854 in
Barren County, Kentucky. At the age of 69 he developed a
cancer that caused a hard swelling of the jaw which was very
excruciating and continued for several months causing his
death. He was buried in the Tolle-snoddy cemetery in Barren
County, Kentucky. There is a deed record in 1856 for the
heirs of William involving 35 acres on Burksville Road.
